What to do with all the food waste?
Did you know that a third of food is wasted in the world? These tips will help you avoid food waste.
We must first define what food waste is. We are referring to any edible food that never reaches stores, unsold food, what we do not eat or is not prepared in restaurants, or food we throw away at home. While waste can occur throughout all food processes (from farms to home), approximately two-thirds of food waste is generated in consumer-facing businesses, such as restaurants and stores, or at home. Although we generally don’t think about it, every day we contribute to food waste by not preparing food well, buying extra groceries, and essentially not taking into account everything that throwing away food impacts. Did you know that around the world we waste a third of all our food? This figure amounts to 1.3 billion tons each year. Each year, consumers in the most developed and richest countries spend almost the same amount of food (222 million tons) as the entire production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tons). Pretty sad, right? The good thing is that innovation, cooperation between communities, advice and a little attention seem to be the way to the solution when it comes to this issue. Another great news is that much of the food waste we produce at home can be avoided!
We leave you the best recommendations 🙂
- Choose your recipes based on what you already have in the fridge and pantry.
- Consider what you would like to prepare during the week, who will be home and try to calculate how much food you will need to make.
- Buy only what you need for the recipes you planned. Planning recipes also makes food storage easier since you will be more aware of what you have stored. You will throw away less food. Even with all these measures, there may still be leftover food that you may not necessarily want to eat the next day or save. But don’t worry, these wastes can be reused in many ways! As homemade pet food or simply as compost. Don’t let this happen to you at night, there are many people out there who will thank you.
