Drinking water at lunch can prevent obesity!

We don’t pay that much attention, but it’s the small details that count. New research concluded that encouraging children to drink plain water with their meals at recess could prevent more than half a million young people from becoming overweight or obese in the US alone. These findings were based on the national expansion of a program conducted in 1,200 elementary and secondary schools in New York City between 2009 and 2013. This consisted of placing water dispensers in school cafeterias. Surprisingly, students’ water consumption tripled. The interesting thing is that the nutritional profile does not change much when people increase their water intake, but there is a significant drop in their intake of saturated fat and sugar. The projected long-term savings of including water in schools compared favorably with other population-level obesity prevention policies, such as imposing excise taxes on sugary drinks and applying nutritional standards for foods and beverages sold in schools outside of meals. This could mark a new option at very low cost for developed countries that would make an incredible difference in a problem that has been on the rise in recent years. It is important that our patients are aware of this. Maybe your children and ours prefer to drink something with sugar, but it is a good time to think about how to restore the habit of natural water as the first drink option we can have.
