5 habits that cause diseases Rita Perez April 6, 2018 No Comments Not everyone thinks about the habits that cause diseases. Although they seem insignificant, they are activities that are carried out frequently and in the long term they can affect our health. Smoking A recent review concluded that redesigning cigarettes, making them “light” or regular had not reduced the overall risk of the disease among smokers. Prevention and abstinence remain the only effective public health measures to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco. Tobacco use and smoke exposure together are responsible for around 6.3 million deaths annually worldwide, representing 6.3% of the global burden of disease, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Alcohol consumption Alcohol consumption is responsible for around 2.7 million deaths annually, representing 3.9% of the global burden of disease. The main causes of mortality attributable to alcohol are cancers, chronic liver disease, unintentional injuries, violence and in some regions that have a high prevalence of harmful excess alcohol consumption, a large number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases. Overweight and obesity Currently, excess weight is responsible for around 3.4 million deaths annually, representing 3.8% of the global burden of morbidity. Diseases such as diabetes and musculoskeletal diseases are among the greatest consequences worldwide due to excess weight. The United States has had the largest absolute increase in the number of obese people since 1980, followed by China, Brazil and Mexico. Nutrition and eating habits Low acid intake Monounsaturated fats, from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds along with a high salt intake are responsible for 1.5% million of deaths globally and represent 4% of the global burden of disease. Physical Activity Physical activity at work, walking, and in some populations, cycling used to be the main contributors to a person’s total energy expenditure, but these activities have declined dramatically in industrial and urban societies. Parallel to this change, the most recent epidemiological studies in high-income countries have focused on activity-insurance-time, with less emphasis on work and local transportation methods, which are important in the development of countries. Now that you know these habits that cause illness, try to avoid them or change them for healthier habits.
