Your patients could suffer from Parkinson’s if they consume this Copy Cwp October 13, 2018 No Comments How many of our patients could develop Parkinson’s disease in the future? We don’t know, but we can, from our consultations at an early age, help them prevent them from suffering from this disease. Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain that control movement. It generally occurs in elderly people, over 60 years of age, and is progressive. Only 1 in 10 people who suffer from Parkinson’s suffer from it before the age of 50. It is estimated that around 6.3 million people in the world suffer from it and the severity of the symptoms is increasing. The person begins with movement problems and may suffer depression, sleep disorders and difficulty speaking or chewing. For this reason, from the consultation we can help them by giving them some advice that could prevent the development of Parkinson’s. For example, higher dairy intake has been found to increase the risk of the disease. Dairy products are an important part of the recommendations we make to our patients, so we must take this information into account when formulating or recommending portions. These foods provide a large amount of essential nutrients for the body, but it is important to know what the appropriate portions are for each patient. Dairy increases the risk of Parkinson’s A recent study revealed that people who consume a minimum of 3 servings of low-fat dairy daily are 34% more likely to suffer from Parkinson’s disease than those who only consume one serving daily. They also discovered that people who consumed more than a serving of low-fat or skimmed milk had a 39% higher risk of developing it than those who only consumed one serving weekly. Researchers looked for a link between whole milk and the risk of Parkinson’s, but did not find it. In this study, 5,830 people were analyzed who consumed a minimum of 3 servings of low-fat dairy products per day and 1% developed Parkinson’s during the research period. On the other hand, 77,864 people consumed less than one serving per day of low-fat dairy and only 0.6% suffered from it. Knowing this is important for our consultation. Because many of our patients believe that they can consume more than one product because it is low in fat. However, many of them are unaware of the risks it entails for the development of some diseases such as Parkinson’s. And it is important that we are well informed to instruct them and teach them to take care of their health. This way we can help them have a better quality of life.
