vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that promotes the prevention and even recovery of different diseases. But the body does not have the capacity to produce it.
Among the various functions of vitamin C we find:
- Maintain collagen, which is a fibrous protein necessary to form connective tissue of the skin, ligaments and bones. Therefore, it is important in the recovery of wounds and burns because it facilitates healing.
- Participates in the formation of red blood cells and in the prevention of bleeding, thus helping in recovery from surgeries and conditions such as anemia.
- Fights bacterial infections and reduces the effects of certain substances produced by allergies. Commonly this vitamin is used to prevent and treat colds.
- It is related to the metabolism of minerals such as calcium, folic acid, among others. In addition, it increases intestinal absorption of iron.
- Promotes the management of stressful situations. There is a gland for the formation of adrenaline (adrenal gland) where we find large amounts of vitamin C. And in situations of stress the levels of ascorbic acid increase rapidly to promote a timely reaction. Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of vitamin C, the body does not have the ability to produce it.
