“We are what we eat”; It is a concept that has been used over time, however we have NOT taken the meaning of this phrase into account since more and more frequently we consume food with “empty calories”, which only make us gain weight and get sick. But what are empty calories? It is an expression used in nutrition to define those foods that contain a large amount of energy, but provide few or no nutrients. That is why the more variety of nutrients a food provides us with, the better. We will then classify 3 levels of foods by caloric value. Fruits and vegetables: low energy density and high nutrient content Nuts: provide a lot of energy and quality nutrients. Junk food: they contain a high energy density but poor nutritional quality. “Empty calories” make our health sick. Eating these foods and lack of exercise makes our body sick. There are numerous studies that specify that the abusive consumption of foods that provide empty calories, versus healthy food, harms health because it promotes weight gain and the development of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes and cancer. Choosing healthy foods is not a trend, it is a way to have a better quality of life. And what do you eat?
