This was the conclusion of a study presented at the 19th Gastrointestinal Cancer Congress of the European Society for Oncological Medicine. Foods to combat colorectal cancer The researchers who were in charge of this study assure that there is a relationship between the components of this diet separately and in combination with the risk of developing advanced colorectal polyps and malignant adenomas. For the medical tests, a group of participants between 40 and 70 years old with a low risk of suffering from it were measured and questioned about their eating habits. The way to define a Mediterranean diet was based on a greater consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fish and chicken. Furthermore, they described advanced polyps as adenomas when they exceeded a size of 10 mm. They then made comparisons of each participant’s eating habits and colonoscopy results. The results showed that people with more advanced polyps consumed m ene elements of a Mediterranean diet in the following proportions: • The group with advanced polyps consumed an average of 1.9 elements of the Mediterranean diet per day. • The segment without advanced polyps consumed an average of 4.5 components daily. The foods that most reduced this risk of developing colorectal cancer were fruits and fish. These two elements, in combination with a low consumption of soft drinks, almost eliminated the risk of advanced polyps.
