Sexuality in Mexican adolescents
Sexuality in adolescents is an important issue in the country since there are currently alarming numbers of unwanted pregnancies.
Speaking of sexuality in Mexican adolescents, we can say that due to the information on sexual health that is taught in public and private schools, adolescents today are more informed about methods of preventing sexually transmitted diseases and preventing unwanted pregnancies. Studies The ENSANUT 2012 shows that knowledge about contraceptive methods has increased steadily among adolescents, since 90% reported having knowledge of some method. This is reflected in the fact that the numbers of adolescents who began unprotected sexual activity decreased. In the case of women from 79.1% in 2000 to 32.9% in 2012. And in men from 47.5% in 2000 to 14.4% in 2012. This has occurred simultaneously with the increase in the percentage of adolescents who reported having initiated a sexual life. From 16% in 2000 to 20.9% in 2012 in women and from 17.5 to 26.2%, in the same period as men. In fact, the birth rate has decreased in pregnant teenagers. But a significant percentage has not been eliminated, which is why unwanted pregnancies continue to be a problem in our country. In recent years there have been several information campaigns about sexuality issues. The main objective of these is to reach low-income communities because according to several studies, that is where information of this type is most needed. It is expected that there will continue to be budget for more campaigns that focus on sexuality in adolescents to reduce the numbers of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Although it is important to continue talking about sexual education issues in schools, experts promote that p parents talk about sexual education with their children. It is a very important issue that should not be the complete responsibility of schools.
