Make your own homemade soda

It's time to make homemade soda! Soda's sweet, bubbly appeal may be difficult to replicate, but this homemade cola syrup is pretty good.

We all know that water is the healthiest drink, but sometimes it’s nice to change things up a bit. Most people reach for soda to break the monotony. Despite being loaded with chemicals, substance dependency, and made primarily from high fructose corn syrup. It’s time to make homemade soda! Soda’s sweet, bubbly appeal may be difficult to replicate, but this homemade cola syrup is pretty good. Homemade cola syrup has a deliciously complex flavor with the perfect combination of sweet, spicy, floral and tart. Shaken in a glass of mineral water and ice, it feels like a gourmet treat. Add a slice of lemon for that special touch and invite your friends after you tell them you can make your own soda!

Homemade Cola Soda

About 3 cups syrup Zest of 3 large lemons 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 sections of an anise pod, crushed 1 teaspoon dried lavender flowers 4 teaspoons ginger 1 vanilla bean, divided Citric acid 1/4 teaspoon 2 cups granulated sugar 3 tablespoons brown sugar

Preparation

Combine all ingredients except sugar in a large saucepan. Add 2 cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain the solid ingredients using a double layer of cheesecloth or a coffee filter. Rinse the pot and discard the solid ingredients. Return the liquid to the pot and cook over low heat. Add the sugars to the saucepan with the liquid and stir until completely dissolved. Remove from heat and allow syrup to cool, then transfer to desired containers and keep refrigerated. To make the soda: Combine 1 tablespoon of syrup with 1 cup of mineral water or soda.
