Lack of sleep may be affecting your patients' weight

Not sleeping well can be linked to metabolic diseases and body weight gain.

Copy Experience October 13, 2018 No Comments Recent studies show that people who slept an average of 9 hours had a waist measurement that was at least 3cm smaller, compared to those who slept an average of 6 hours or less. This study strengthens the evidence that was previously available, where lack of sleep was linked to metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Other factors taken into account, apart from diet, weight and sleep, were blood pressure, blood cholesterol level, blood sugar level and thyroid function. The study, led by Dr. Laura Hardie at the University of Leeds in England, collected information from 1,615 participants and found associations between their hours of sleep and the aforementioned biological parameters. Determining an exact amount of sleep would be a form of simplification. Each patient’s needs are specific to their body and condition. As health experts, it is important to know the cause of one of the worst illnesses that afflict our patients, such as obesity. Lack of sleep was also linked to a reduction in HDL cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. This is a good type of cholesterol that helps remove “bad” fats. By doing this, it protects patients from certain heart conditions. The general consensus is that between 7 and 9 hours is still ideal for an adult.
