How we can control diabetes Copy Cwp April 8, 2018 No Comments Mexicans are the most prone to diabetes, since the disease is greater among our population than in other parts of the world, because we are characterized by a sedentary lifestyle and a high intake of sugar and fats. Diabetes is a metabolic condition that is manifested by high blood glucose levels within normal limits, and what causes it is an insufficient lack of insulin in the pancreas. This condition is considered the leading cause of death from disease in Mexico. However, we will give you some tips to control diabetes. Types of diabetes There is type I diabetes, which is when the person is insulin dependent and the pancreas does not produce insulin. In type II diabetes the pancreas produces insulin, however, the insulin does not work in the body as it should and blood sugar levels become too high. There is also gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy. Symptoms An important detail in type II diabetes is that the symptoms appear gradually and it is very common not to give them due importance. Some common symptoms are feeling more fatigued than usual, some changes in vision, more frequent urination (urinating), but many times we get used to living with these symptoms and we downplay the fact that they are signs of a probable onset of this disease. The diabetic patient must take great personal care to reduce the complications that can manifest in many parts of the body; either in the retina of the eyes, because vision can decrease, or it can cause serious kidney damage, in addition to preventing cardiovascular damage; avoid complications and do not have a poor quality of life, that is diabetes control. Treatment Currently there are very advanced therapies for the treatment of this disease but unfortunately the incidence of diabetes has been increasing. “The most important thing is prevention, the people who are most at risk are those who suffer from obesity or those who have a family history, due to genetics.” To prevent diabetes we must reduce predisposing factors that can be modified such as overweight, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate diet, stress, etc., since the genetic factor cannot be modified. Here we present some actions to prevent and control this disease. Tips to control diabetes 1.- Control your weight You cannot modify your genes but we can have control over the size of your clothes. In various medical studies it has been shown that by losing 5 to 10% of our current weight we can reduce the risk of developing diabetes and its complications since by reducing fat insulin works better in the body. That is why it is important to make the decision to start with a well-balanced eating plan to achieve this reduction little by little. Get in the habit of recording your waist measurements as well as your weight. For women, a waist greater than 80cm increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes, especially if their Body Mass Index is greater than 25. For men this measurement should be less than 92cm to reduce risks. 2.- Exercise Recent research shows that any type of exercise or physical activity improves blood glucose control. You don’t have to join a gym or run many kilometers a day, just go for a walk 3 to 4 times a week. about 30 to 40 minutes or do a stationary bike when watching television. 3.-Perform a blood glucose test If you have a first-generation relative (parents, siblings) with type 2 diabetes, you have a genetic link and are overweight, the risk doubles. Get checked as soon as possible and hopefully your values are normal but, however, you must remain vigilant, eat a balanced diet, stay active and keep your weight as close to your ideal weight as possible. If your blood glucose level is higher than normal, but does not reach 126mg/dl which is practically the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes (pre-diabetes = 100-125mg/dl), it means that you need to take control now to avoid complications. 4.- Take control If you already have diabetes, you can manage your disease and not let it control you. Follow your dietary regimen and be persistent with your physical activity and perform your blood glucose test often, but it is very important to follow the instructions of your doctor and nutritionist. Currently, there are devices on the market to measure glucose (glucometers), which are very easy to use and safe and with a barely perceptible sting can help you monitor your glucose levels. 5.- Seek professional help You are not alone with this disease. With the right therapy and nutritional advice and some frequent physical activity, you will be able to lead a normal, uncomplicated life. The most important thing is to have the tools at hand and full knowledge of diabetes to avoid taking risks.
