Eating too many french fries can kill you
The consumption of French fries is directly related to the risk of mortality, according to this study.
We know that our patients are the most important thing and therefore being aware of the most recent research is crucial to be able to identify the variables to take care of in their diet. A recent study focused on identifying whether potato consumption (fried or not) was associated with increased risk of premature mortality in North America. For 8 years, 4440 participants, aged between 45 and 79 years, were followed. The study was carried out by the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Potato consumption was analyzed through a series of constant questionnaires to the participants, where they mentioned the frequency of their potato consumption. Of the 4440, 57.9% were women (2551). Throughout the research period, 236 participants died. Taking into account the lowest potato consumers as a reference, participants with high consumption did not show an increased risk of mortality. However, in the subgroup analysis, participants who consumed French fries 2 to 3 or more times per week showed an increased risk of mortality. Consumption of unfried potatoes was not associated with an increased risk of death. The researchers’ conclusion is that it seems that high consumption of French fries is directly linked to an increased risk of mortality. More research still needs to be done.
