Bullying due to childhood obesity

Obesity will not only bring health problems to minors, but it can also cause psychological problems due to bullying.

Obesity will not only bring health problems to minors, but it can also cause psychological problems, due to bullying. What is bullying? When we talk about bullying we refer to all types of negative actions that can be verbal, psychological and even physical, which lead the victim to situations of harassment and intimidation, instilling fear or terror. The reasons why one person bullies another can be diverse and obese children are no exception. Different studies have shown the association between obesity and child abuse, pointing out that obesity in children can be the cause of various types of aggression, such as bullying at school, which has a negative impact, whatever the reason, on the child’s psychosocial development. According to the National Human Rights Commission, 40% of students in our country suffer bullying; of these, it is believed that about 60% of the children who suffer from it are obese. Consequences In any bullied child, it is essential to address the issue of self-esteem, but in the case of those who suffer from obesity, it is essential to consider that this condition is not only reducing their physical health, but is also having psychological and social consequences. It is important that the child with obesity, regardless of whether he is bullied or is the one who bullies, can change his habits, start doing physical activity and improve his security, either to avoid being abused or to avoid using bullying of other classmates as a defense mechanism. How to avoid it? To confront acts of bullying, first, it is important to talk with the bully and teach him to be empathetic, to respect and to have compassion; Make it clear to him what expectations you have regarding his behavior and let him know, in a clear way, that the consequences of bullying can be fatal. Teaching by example is essential. It is very important to ensure that the victim does not feel responsible for the attacks they suffer and to try to prevent them from falling into the bullies’ game. That is, do not get angry or try to defend yourself, as this will cause the bully to continue attacking you. You should remain calm and even do nothing and leave. Likewise, it is very important to instill the confidence to seek help at your school or from any trusted adult. If your child suffers from obesity, it is important that for his physical and psychological health, you help him become healthy again.
